The view from the uppermost castle-hill breaks onto a river valley, and when the sun is just right there’s nothing like it

for thousands of miles. A country so flat – where would Zarathustra dance? Or Zorba? Here, we are always looking up

at skies (usually cloudy), at church vaults full of putti,

saints on faux marble clouds, or at the crowns of pine trees
